Once upon a time, transit ads were screenprinted in one, two, three or even four colors on self-adhesive vinyl or busboards. The makeready process is time-consuming and expensive. 
This is still the most cost-effective way for producing large runs (50 or more) of one full color image, or for 20 or more single color images. We have been printing full color "digital silkscreen" bus decals on Flexcon Busmark material since 2001, having pioneered the process in Santa Barbara. This is a six color direct solvent printing process, using process colors to make up the various colors on an image. Turnaround time is measured in days, not weeks, and the process is very cost-effective, even for small production runs or larger jobs with a variety of images.
